I didn't know if I should put this movie in the classic category or under the action and adventure heading. Finally the adventure and action theme won the coin toss.
This movie by is the story of King Lear looked at through Japanese eyes and sensibilities. It was directed by Akira Kurosawa. Need I say more?
In Ran the King's three sons are looking at the end of their father's rule. One son is truthful while the other two who lie and flatter the father get the father's confidence. Then we all follow the father's, the King's, fall into madness. It's a wonderful film.
There is such beauty and violence ion this film that you will feel as if you have been run over by a truck.
If you have trouble with subtitles get the version that is dubbed, but don't miss this movie. I can still see some of the scenes when I close my eyes. Waving red flags in the midst of battle, the wife of one son who grovels on the floor weeping. WOW, it's something to see a movie that can make it's mark on the audience.
