Aside from the Exorcist (that I watched when I was maybe 5!), I just can't find any horror movie that will scare. I want to watch one that will make me jump out of my chair and then not be able to sleep at night. Any suggestions?

Try Faces of Death. I know much of it is supposed to be fake, but these movies scare the living hell out of me !

Yeah, there are really no "newer" horror movies that can scare me either. But back in the day, they really know how to make some scary movies. "Psycho" still scares me to this day, and in a weird way so does "Jaws". I didn't go into the water for months after watching "Jaws".

If you want classic-scare, you need to watch "Carrie," Brian de Palma's take on Stephen King's first novel. It's been remade, of course, but Sissy Spacek, Amy Irving, and Piper Laurie are great in that film.

You can try watching "The Mist" when it comes out on DVD sometime this year. It was made by the guy who did "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption."

It all depends on what scares you. Sometimes were terrified of The Blair Witch Project while others thought it was lame. I think just about everyone got scared at some point during The Exorcist. Give some examples of things that make a good horror film to you.

I don't want to sound like an echo, but it'll be hard to recommend a film that will scare you without knowing what, in essence, gives you the willies.

Have you considered watching any of Alfred Hitchcock's suspense thrillers? They rarely involve monsters or beasts, although The Birds is a nature-goes-amok horror story.

I don't like all of his movies, but there are a few good scary ones. You already named The Birds, but I'll add the one that scared me most: Psycho.

Try watching Event Horizon. If this does not scare ya or at least affect ya then something is wrong and maybe you need to think about picking a different genre .

Watch The Shining. I am not that big on horror movies, but two that I find real good are The Exorcist, which was already named, and The Shining, with Jack Nicholson. It will make you ask the bartender next time for red rum.
