With the release of the rather lackluster The Bucket List, I was thinking about the director, Rob Reiner, and how he first became famous by playing All in the Family's Mike Stivic, Archie Bunker's uber-liberal son-in-law/comic foil, a.k.a. The Meathead. While I was too young to appreciate much of the show's humor when it was on CBS, I now get many of the jokes and realize how talented the cast, directors, and writers on that show were.

Also impressive is the number of spin-off series begat by All in the Family

Maude

The Jeffersons

Good Times, a spin-off of Maude

Archie Bunker's Place

I think there was also a failed series starring Reiner and Sally Struthers as Mike and Gloria.

I caught the last season of All in the Family when I was in 5th grade and watch it when it goes into reruns channels like TV Land on cable. While it may seem rather tame in some respects compared to say, Two and a Half Men, this show broke some sitcom conventions and was fairly real in its day.

I loved All In The Family. Many people hated the show, but just as many loved it. It did foster a lot of spin-off shows which tells alot about the show. I try to catch reruns when I can.

I never liked this show. However, growing up my dad did so I watched a lot of it. He really enjoyed Archie Bunker's style.

I think the show also had a milestone of the longest laugh, or something like that.

I read that it happened when Sammy Davis Jr. was on the show and in the story, he tricked Archie Bunker into kissing him for a photo, or something like that.

I remember seeing it, but I'm not sure of the details.
