View Full Version : Jaws - the original, not the crappy sequels!

One of my favorite scary movies - which arguably could also fall into the action category - is Steven Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster Jaws. This film has everything going for it - a great cast, terrific sense of pacing, nail-biting "Oh my God!" moments, and a memorable John Williams score.
Sadly, Spielberg has - wrongly - been blamed for the trio of bad sequels that followed in this movie's wake, and as a result, many people don't watch the first movie because they think it is like the others.
What about the rest of the Talk Flicks gang? What's your opinion?

If any movie can cause you to stay away from the water, and give you nightmares about sharks, then it's truly a horror movie ;). I love the first "Jaws", but hated the rest of them.

How can anyone not like a movie that gave the world this line?

What always bugs me about the Jaws movies is - besides how each one gets sillier and sillier - that Steven Spielberg is always blamed for the existence of 2, 3, and 4. He only directed the first one. That was the limit of his involvement with the "series."

The silliest of the non-Spielberg Jaws flicks was the fourth one. That one had a Great White Shark with an overdeveloped sense of vengeance.

I was not allowed to watch Jaws when it first came out. I was only 12 and my parents thought I was much too young to see it.
I got to see it six years later when I was invited to my neighbor Jackie's house; her family had one of the first VCRs I ever saw and Jaws was one of the movies we got to see. (Grease was the other.) I liked it a lot then, and I still do now.
I don't get why Spielberg was blamed for all the other bad ones in the series. He only directed the first one, and he didn't invent the movie or the book it's based on.

Jaws is one of my all time favourite movies. I saw it a few times at the theatre and drive-in.
I saw part of the first sequel on TV a while ago, and it wasn't as bad as I remembered.
I was impressed with how many special features are on the DVD, considering they couldn't have known that the extra stuff they were shooting would be used in that way.

I went to see Jaws in the theatre when it came out. My boyfriend and I noticed an old lady in the row behind us and wondered if she would have a heart attack. The most startling scene that I remember was when the head fell out of the hole in the bottom of the first boat that got attacked. It wasn't a scary scene, but it was unexpected and made everyone in the whole theatre jump.
