I just saw this again recently. I had not seen it since I was a kid, and never realized what an amazing movie this is. From the acting, directing, to the plot, the whole story is just incredible. I didn't remember Oprah Winfrey being such a talented actress, but she was AWESOME.

That was Oprah's breakout film, and she was actually nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe award for her role as Sophia. I love this flick too. It is one of those I can watch over and over again and never tire of it. I cry every time I watch it.

I remember this film quite well, not just for the good (and expected) reasons of its quality in the areas already commented about, but also for the bad.

As a fan of Steven Spielberg - fully realizing that not all the films he makes are good, mind - I remember that he was overlooked by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (aka "The Academy") for a nomination as Best Director for 1985. I'm not sure who won that year, and for what movie, but I remember that in my college campus newspaper office there was a discussion about why Spielberg wasn't nominated as Best Director even though The Color Purple was nominated for Oscars in 11 categories, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Score, and Best Adapted Screenplay. In short, because the film won no Oscars at all, we all thought it was a snub.

Why? Because up to the point Spielberg had either directed, written, or produced several of the top-grossing films of all time up to that point? Or was it "motion picture snobbery" that dictates that "popular" films are somewhat less Oscar-worthy than "serious" films? The Color Purple was Spielberg's most serious drama in his filmography at that time, and it had every ingredient most Best Picture winners contain...yet it won no Oscars.

I love this movie too! Oprah was excellent. The book is also really good and if you've never read it, you might want to. I couldn't put it down when I was reading it. There was a lot of detail as always in the book but it's a toss up on this story as to whether or not the book is better than the movie.

When I went to see the Color Purple I will be honest I did not really expect much from the film, but I was surprised. The whole cast was excellent and Oprah was very good as well. Never thought she would do such a good job.

Wow, this is an old movie. But one of those movies you will remember. I love movies that stick with you even years after you have seen it.
