For me, the best fantasy films ever made are the three movies that make up Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, based on the famous novel (it's one big novel broken up into three volumes, not a trilogy) by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Having heard for years that this story was too big and too complicated to be made into a film, I was skeptical that Jackson could pull it off. Yet, with passion and dedication, he and his team of writers, actors, and technical crew completed the saga of Frodo Baggins and the One Ring and earned many awards and the admiration of many movie goers.

I remember when Ralph Bakshi tried to make the book into an animated movie and he, even though he condensed the story a lot, never got around to doing the second part promised (the title of his version was The Lord of the Rings Part I).

Thus, I had low expectations for the Peter Jackson version, but man, was I blown away by the three movies!

I didn't know there had been an earlier version of LOTR. And it was animated?

Yes, in 1978 the guy who created Fritz the Cat tried to adapt the Tolkien novel into a two-part animated film which used a technique called rotoscoping to create its distinct look.

According to the Internet Movie Database, this is how the film was done:

"Filmed with live actors in black-and-white and rotoscoped, each animation cel drawn over a film frame of an actor. This was the first entirely rotoscoped animated feature."

I did not think when I first heard about the Lord of The Rings coming out the series would be as good as it has. Give Peter jackson credit as he did an excellent job on it.
